This Golf Mk2 automoatic was dropped off today for some work. It's a recent purchase for my customer, he knew it had a gearbox fault, what he didn't know was that the photos used to sell it were taken what looks like 10 years ago and it's sat outside since. Under the faded paint it is a very solid car with a spotless interior, maybe because it was imported from South Africa, so a bit of buffing should bring some brightness back - I won't be doing that. The main mechanical issue is a wrecked differential, it picks up when you push the car in neutral and makes a horrid grinding noise if you start the engine and select reverse. The owner has found a replacement transmission for a rather appealing price so I'm just going to do a swap, the broken one is almost out so I'd have to call it straightforward for now. I've also pulled out the passenger seat as the rear carpet on that side is drenched thanks to a sunroof that had been left open - thankfully not for the whole time it's been standing.
